The real strength of your business lies not in your monetary assets, but in your employees. A successful business is possible only when your employees not just need to work for you, but want to work for you. We have all heard of mediocre supervisors and managers who take their team for granted, do not respect their efforts, do not appreciate their diligence and do not offer rewards. The end result? Unless you – as a business owner – display good attitude, you are never going to get loyal employees. Employee dissatisfaction is widely regarded as the one of the main reasons for high turnovers at companies. When you are owning your business, especially, you cannot afford to lose good workers. Much like in marketing where it’s more expensive to acquire new customers than maintain a satisfying relationship with current customers, employers too will find that hiring and training new employees uses up many more resources than keeping your current employees happy.
Many employers blame lack of monetary incentives for the employee turnovers. The common complaint is: “How can I give them a raise when I am struggling to get established or stay afloat!” But you actually underestimate your employees. What you need to realize is that they are not just asking for raises. While monetary incentives are wonderful, appreciation can be shown in many different ways. From a simple Thank You to a mention in your company newsletter to creating a team-friendly atmosphere to celebrating birthdays, there are multiple non-monetary rewards that will work wonders! In fact, some studies have shown that although monetary rewards are good for the short-term, non-monetary incentives create a lasting emotional connection that encourages them to stick by you through thick and thin.
