When cleaning carpets, it is important to not “overwet” the carpet so as to avoid damage. Overwetting can separate the carpet from the backing, tear fibers, cause discoloration of the dye, and create mold and mildew. Mold is the most serious offense because it damages air quality and provides a health hazard, especially to those individuals with asthma. Safer methods for cleaning include using agents such as dry compounds, foams, shampoos, and bonnets.
Dry absorbent compounds and foams use the least amount of moisture of all methods but can still leave some soil content in the carpet. Using shampoos, a cleaning solution is injected into the carpet that penetrates the fibers and provides long-lasting protection against soil buildup. Bonnets employ a detergent that is sprayed over the carpet. A machine attached with an absorbent pad then rotates over the carpet, collecting any soil that adheres to the pad. Another method exists that experts would agree is the safest and most effective method, yet the most complex. With Hot-Water Extraction, a spray is initially applied to loosen any soil, and then hot water is pumped into the carpet at high pressure for a deep clean. The water is heated to over 200 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in effective cleaning and facilitated drying.
